Zion Church welcomes and serves all persons, standing firm in the belief that social and economic justice is not just a mission—it is a calling. Our unwavering commitment to equality in health, education, peace, harmony, and the general welfare of humankind remains our hallmark, thus earning us the honored title of “The Freedom Church.”

John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church has a rich history dating back to 1849, Founded by John Brent and John Ingram when after serving at Foundry United Methodist Church, living in the days where even the level of their worship to almighty God was determined by the color of your skin. 

John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church today offers dynamic and lively worship services filled with powerful preaching, uplifting music, and heartfelt prayer. A family atmosphere creating a space where all feel welcome, loved, and spiritually nourished. John Wesley AME Zion Church continues to believe in building strong relationships within the church community, ensuring that everyone has a place to belong and grow.

About Our Pastor 

Rev. Dr. Christopher L. Zacharias is a visionary leader with over 25 years of experience in the non-profit and social services sectors, serving as both a pastor and faith community leader. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to serving those in need, fostering meaningful change, and driving community development.

Dr. Zacharias is known for leaving a legacy of effective ministry endeavors and accomplishments at each church he serves. He has served at multiple Zion Churches and currently serves as Pastor of John Wesley A.M.E. Zion Church, the National Church of Zion Methodism located in Washington, D.C. Dr. Zacharias is a published author of “Spiritual Renewal for an Abundant Life” a 40-day devotion for the Lenten season. Additionally, he has numerous published articles, including “Authentic Care toward God’s People” in the book, “United Against Racism- Churches for Change”.

As an ecumenical leader, Pastor Zacharias currently serves as Executive Director for the Interfaith Action for Human Rights, helping to fight for legislation for prison reform. Pastor Zacharias delights in working and partnering with diverse groups of people. He is recognized as being one who bring others together to work on common causes for Christ and God’s people. He currently serves as the Vice President, D.C. Mayor’s Interfaith Council, an executive board member of Metro Interfaith Council in D.C., Leadership Council of Healthy Communities in DC and D.C. Power. He also serves as D.C. Faith Coordinator for the Poor People’s Campaign under the well-known civil rights activist Bishop William Barber. Pastor Zacharias has also served as the Third Vice President of the NAACP - San Francisco. He served on the Board of Directors for the Buchanan YMCA of San Francisco, executive boards for Unity – Bridging the Gap between African Americans and Jews, Faith in Action and the Interfaith Council in San Francisco and Washington, DC.
